Samuel

Rudy’s hand burned hot in his, and a new awareness bloomed in Samuel. If he curled in, if he snuggled against Rudy’s side, he’d be welcomed. Rudy would wrap him in a warm embrace. He’d be happy to do it. And his delicious forest scent would envelop Samuel completely.

But Samuel was frozen where he lay. He wouldn’t cuddle in. Couldn’t bring himself to move even a single muscle. Instead, he concentrated on the feel of Rudy’s fingers between his, the warm palm against his cold one, and made himself content with that.

Sometime during the day, Samuel was jostled awake as a slumbering Rudy rolled against him. The length of him pressed along Samuel’s side with one arm flung over his abdomen and one leg slung over his thigh. Samuel would have squirmed away if Rudy had done it on purpose, but the coyote was sound asleep. He couldn’t be blamed for his nature.

So Samuel permitted himself to enjoy the heat, but no more than that. This was temporary. He’d do himself no favors getting used to Rudy’s warmth, his easy affection.

By sunset, Samuel was so attuned to Rudy’s every movement he sensed when the coyote awoke. It happened in stages. A deep breath, a sigh as he cuddled closer. The hand over Samuel’s stomach slid to his side and squeezed. His mouth snuffled Samuel’s ear. Rudy’s soft breath puffed a damp spot on his cheek, followed by a delicious stillness between them.

Then came the inevitable moment Rudy realized where he was—and who he was with—and his whole body stiffened. He smelled of fear.

Samuel had done this with his fickle nature. Convinced Rudy he’d be angry over the infraction.

As Rudy delicately attempted to untangle himself without waking him, Samuel’s guilt forced him to speak up.

“It’s all right, Rudy.”

The coyote froze. “It is?”

“I know you didn’t smother me on purpose.”

Rudy relaxed again slowly, a heavy weight against Samuel’s tense side. “You okay?”

“Yes, fine. You’re hardly a bother, sleeping as soundly as you do.”

“Have you been awake long? Did I wake you?”

“No on both counts,” Samuel lied. “Don’t fret. You’re very warm.”

“You don’t like it?”

“I do like it,” he admitted, though the butterflies dancing in his chest made him feel vulnerable. He never knew what to do with his hands. One was stuck between himself and Rudy, the other against his side because he couldn’t bring himself to return the embrace.

“Can I touch your chest?” Rudy trailed his fingers along Samuel’s ribs.

“Yes.” His voice was stubbornly hesitant as if it, too, feared his wrath.

Rudy moved his hand from his side, up his sternum, and to his breast, the heat bleeding through clothes to flesh.

Samuel shut his eyes.

He remembered sex. He knew what lovers wanted of him. He’d sworn it off for a reason, but Rudy had him questioning everything.

Rudy didn’t ask for anything further. He stroked Samuel’s chest sweetly, not possessively, and not to a point. Samuel made every effort to relax and let it happen, loosening one tense muscle at a time until the attention left him melting into the bed.
